Formula

T is the reading time in minutes, W is the total word count, and S is the reading speed in words per minute (wpm).

Source: Rayner, K. et al. (2016). So Much to Read, So Little Time. Psychological Science in the Public Interest.

How it works

The calculation divides the total number of words by the reader's speed in words per minute (wpm). The average adult reads silently at around 238 wpm according to research, though this varies considerably — slower readers average around 150 wpm, while fast readers can exceed 400 wpm. Speed-reading techniques can push this even higher, though comprehension often decreases at extreme speeds.

To get the most accurate estimate, use your own measured reading speed. You can find this by timing yourself reading a passage of known word count and dividing words by minutes elapsed. Academic or technical material typically requires 50–100 wpm slower than casual reading.

Worked example

Suppose you want to read an article with 1,500 words and your reading speed is 250 wpm.

Using the formula: T = 1500 ÷ 250 = 6 minutes.

If instead you read at 150 wpm (slower, perhaps due to technical content), the same article would take 1500 ÷ 150 = 10 minutes. A fast reader at 400 wpm would finish in just 3.75 minutes.

Limitations & notes

This calculator provides a pure time estimate and does not account for comprehension pauses, re-reading, footnotes, or images. Reading speed also varies significantly with text complexity — scientific papers and legal documents take considerably longer than fiction or news articles. The 238 wpm average is based on silent reading of standard English prose and may not apply to other languages or formats.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average adult reading speed?

Research suggests the average adult reads silently at approximately 238 words per minute for non-fiction prose. This figure varies widely based on age, education, and familiarity with the subject matter.

How do I find my own reading speed?

Time yourself reading a passage of known length (many online articles display word counts), then divide the word count by the number of minutes it took. Repeat this a few times and average the results for accuracy.

Does reading speed affect comprehension?

Yes — studies show that comprehension tends to decline as reading speed increases beyond a comfortable pace. Speed-reading claims of 1,000+ wpm with full comprehension are generally not supported by scientific evidence.

How long does it take to read a full novel?

A typical novel contains around 80,000–100,000 words. At 238 wpm, that works out to roughly 5.6–7 hours of reading time, usually spread over multiple sessions.

What reading speed should I use for academic or technical text?

For dense academic or technical material, a reading speed of 100–150 wpm is more realistic as you often need to pause, re-read, and process complex ideas. Adjust the speed input accordingly for a more accurate estimate.
