The fundamental formula is: Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Efficiency) × Fuel Price. For example, in imperial units: if you drive 200 miles at 30 MPG and pay $3.50 per US gallon, you consume 200 ÷ 30 = 6.67 gallons, costing 6.67 × $3.50 = $23.33. In metric units: if you drive 300 km at 8 L/100km and pay $1.60 per litre, you consume (8 ÷ 100) × 300 = 24 litres, costing 24 × $1.60 = $38.40. All efficiency formats are internally converted to a consistent litres-consumed figure before the final price calculation.

Step 2 — Calculate fuel consumed:
403 miles ÷ 40 MPG = 10.075 US gallons = 10.075 × 3.78541 = 38.13 litres.
Step 3 — Calculate total cost:
38.13 litres × £1.55 = £59.10.
Step 4 — Cost per mile:
£59.10 ÷ 403 miles = £0.147 per mile.
This means the fuel cost for the entire London–Edinburgh journey is approximately £59, or about 14.7p per mile. This is purely the fuel component — other costs like tolls, parking, and vehicle wear are not included.

No — this calculator estimates fuel cost only. The true cost per mile of driving also includes vehicle depreciation, maintenance (oil, tyres, brakes), insurance, and registration. According to AAA, the total cost of car ownership in the US averages around 60–70 cents per mile when all factors are included, compared to perhaps 10–15 cents per mile in fuel alone for an average car.
Why is my real-world fuel consumption different from the manufacturer's rating?
Manufacturer fuel economy ratings are measured under controlled laboratory conditions that don't reflect real-world driving. Stop-and-go city traffic, high-speed motorway cruising, air conditioning, a heavy load, cold weather, tyre pressure, and aggressive acceleration all reduce fuel efficiency.
